Shopify Days of Stock and Cost per Item: The New Black AI

How long does the stock of a product last? And what did each unit cost you? Two questions a Shopify fashion brand asks every week, and two fields that The New Black AI now shows on one line in the Store page's Inventory view.

What the view shows

For each product of your Shopify store:

• Stock: the sum of its variants' quantities, as Shopify holds them.
• Days of stock: the stock divided by the daily pace of your last thirty days of sales. A product with no sales shows no figure; a wrong number is worse than none.
• Sold, 30 days: the units sold over those thirty days.
• Cost per item: Shopify's own unit cost, editable in place. Type it on the product line and every variant gets it; if the variants already carry different costs, the product unfolds so you edit each one.

How it works

1. Open the Store page, Products, then Inventory. A store connected before this version has an Enable button to grant the two inventory scopes. 2. Read the days of stock and sort by them to see what runs out first. 3. Type the missing costs. They are written to Shopify's inventory item, where its margin reports read them.

Why it matters for a merchant

Shopify's Days of inventory remaining report exists, but it lives three menus away from the product, and the cost per item is empty on most stores because nobody fills it. The cost is the brick a profit calculation is missing: once typed here, the Profit & loss of the same page can count the cost of goods sold.
