Shopify Variant Images per Color: The New Black AI

Published 24 September 2026

A product in three colours needs three pictures, one on each variant, so the shopper who picks blush sees blush. The New Black AI now does that from the product window: a Variants tab, one line per variant, and the picture set from your creations.

What the Variants tab shows

Every variant of the product with its price, its SKU and the photo Shopify shows first when that variant is selected. Three gestures on each line: Choose a picture, which opens your creations, Upload, for a file from your computer, and Remove.

How it works

1. Open the product in the studio's Shopify view, then the Variants tab. 2. Choose a picture for each variant. The picture is added to the product's media, the same way the Shopify admin does it when you drag an image onto a variant. 3. Or start from a creation: on its tile, Use for a variant. If the creation is not yet on the product page it is published there first, then attached to the variant you choose.

Why it matters for a merchant

Shopify assigns one picture per variant and shows it as the preview when the variant is chosen. Doing it for every colour of every product means uploading, then dragging, in the admin. When the colour versions were generated in the studio, sending each one to its variant from the same window is the missing step, and it is the only thing this tab does: it fills Shopify, it does not guess.

The feature is described on Shopify Variants: one picture per variant. Making the colour versions is Change a Color, and publishing to the page is in Publish creations to Shopify product pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can a variant have several pictures?+

Not in Shopify: one assigned picture per variant. The gallery carries the others.

Is the picture filed apart?+

No. It is one of the product's own media, so nothing has to be removed from the page afterwards.

Can an AI agent do it?+

Yes. The agents you hire read a product's variants and set a variant's image with the same function.
