Clothing Design Software: The New Black AI

Published 1 October 2026

Clothing design software is any program that takes a garment from idea to something a factory can make: a sketch, a pattern, a 3D sample, a tech pack. No single tool does every step the same way, and the right choice depends on which step costs you the most time. This guide sorts the five kinds of fashion design software by the job they do, then shows where an AI design studio fits.

The five kinds of clothing design software

3D garment simulationVirtual samples on an avatar, fit and drapeBrands with a technical teamPatterns first; a steep learning curve

The first four were built for the later steps of a collection, once a design is chosen. AI design software works on the first step, the one that used to be a blank page: what the garment looks like.

What AI clothing design software does

An AI design studio turns a description or a picture into a garment you can look at. On The New Black AI the studio covers the chain from the first idea to the documents a maker reads:

1. Concept. In Create a Product, describe the piece ("a cropped boxy jacket in waxed cotton, patch pockets, corduroy collar") and get it as a product photo or worn by a model. Garments, shoes, bags, jewelry, eyewear and headwear each have their own setting. 2. Variations. Change one word, the colour, the fabric, the length, and generate again. Ten directions take a few minutes. 3. Prints. Text to Textile makes a seamless print from a description, and it can be placed on the garment. 4. Technical flat. Image to Sketch turns the chosen design into a clean line drawing, and the sketch can be vectorized into SVG for your drawing software. 5. 3D model. Image to 3D builds a 3D model of the piece, exported in FBX, USDZ, OBJ, STL, 3MF or glTF. 6. Tech pack. The tech pack tool holds the flat, the callouts, the size chart, the bill of materials, and exports a PDF for the factory.

It does not replace a pattern maker or a 3D fit session on a real block. It replaces the weeks between an idea and a design worth sampling.

How to choose clothing design software

Start from the step that slows you down.

  • You struggle to get ideas onto paper: an AI design generator, then a drawing tool for the flats.
  • You have designs but no technical documents: a tech pack tool, with flats drawn from your designs.
  • You sample a lot and want fewer physical samples: 3D simulation, if you have patterns and someone to run it.
  • You grade and cut in volume: pattern-making CAD, usually at your factory.
  • You are starting a brand alone: one tool that goes from concept to tech pack, so nothing is retyped between programs.

Price is the other filter. Professional CAD and 3D suites are sold per seat, by the year. AI studios are usually priced by generation: on The New Black AI an image costs 1 credit on Standard AI or 3 on PRO AI, a 3D model 10 credits, and every account starts with free credits.

Is there free clothing design software?

Yes, for the first steps. Free drawing apps handle simple flats, and an AI studio lets you design your first pieces on the credits an account opens with. The tech pack tool and the moodboard are free to use by hand on The New Black AI; only AI generations use credits. What is rarely free is the professional end: pattern CAD and 3D simulation.

Frequently asked questions

What software do fashion designers use?+

Most use several: a vector drawing program for flats, a pattern CAD at the factory, sometimes a 3D simulation tool, a tech pack or PLM tool for production, and more and more an AI design studio for concepts and images.

Can AI design clothes?+

Yes. An AI design studio draws a garment from a description or a reference picture, in seconds, as a product photo or on a model. The designer still chooses, edits and decides what goes to sampling.

What is the best clothing design software for beginners?+

One that needs no drawing skill and no pattern knowledge to start: an AI design studio for the look of the piece, with a tech pack tool in the same place for the documents a factory asks for.

Can I use AI designs for my own brand?+

Yes. Everything you generate on The New Black AI is yours to sell, print and publish, on every plan.

Does AI clothing design software make patterns?+

Not production patterns. It makes the design, the flat sketch, a 3D model and the tech pack; the pattern is still cut by a pattern maker or in pattern CAD from those documents.
